City information![]() Fountain on Osisko Lake In the early 1900s, the region was a vast forest with rivers running through and inaccessible lakes until the day a prospector from Nova Scotia explored the territory in 1911 and discovered huge amounts of copper. Rouyn became a mining town in 1926 and still is. Noranda Mines grew into a vast mining empire from the mine which operated from 1927 to 1966.
