Kapuskasing, ONAirport information
City information
The town of Kapuskasing gets its name from the Kapuskasing River. The river gets its name from the lake at its source to the south, Kapuskasing Lake. Kapuskasing is a Cree word meaning “Bend in River.” The Kapuskasing River was named long before the existence of the town. Tourism is an important industry in Kapuskasing. Community members strive to infuse culture and adventure into everyday life. Kapuskasing hosts several festivals and events yearly including the Festival of Lights, the Kapuskasing Lumberjack Heritage Festival, the Annual Ice Fishing Derby and the ATV rally. The Kapuskasing river offers a beautiful setting to many sporting activities.
The river merges with the Mattagami River, flowing north (as part of the Arctic watershed) towards James Bay and Hudson Bay. The largest body of water, Remi Lake, is situated just east of Kapuskasing. Along with the Opasatika system, it is the most popular recreation area of the region.
