Arviat, NUAirport information
City information![]() Arviat church Arviat, the southernmost major city in Nunavut, is primarily accessible by air and close to the geographical centre of Canada. Relatively bustling compared to some of Nunavut’s other destinations, the former “Eskimo Point” is a great place to test your affinity for arctic travel. There’s just enough civilization here to allow you to straddle the line between tourist and adventurer and see on which side you fall. Situated on the western shore of Hudson Bay, Arviat has been inhabited since the 1100s, supporting Thule, Inuit, and Paallirmiut life primarily through trapping and whale hunting. The long, rich cultural history that has been passed down informs residents’ way of life, and is carried forward in beautiful native music and art. There are plenty of amazing, unique outdoor experiences to be had in and around Arviat. At McConnell River Migratory Bird Sanctuary you can observe nesting sites of owls and gyrfalcons. Hiking and ice fishing are spectacular year-round. This is the only airport in the rally with runways using true north as reference. A great opportunity to experience true north navigation.
